The Nitric Oxide Connection
Exercise increases nitric oxide production through a mechanism separate from diet: shear stress. As blood moves faster through your vessels during physical activity, the increased friction against the endothelium directly stimulates endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity. Research in both animal and human models has shown that regular endurance training increases eNOS expression and helps preserve endothelial function that would otherwise decline with age. This is a genuinely different pathway from dietary nitrate, which is one reason the two approaches, moving more and eating nitrate-rich food, tend to work well together rather than substituting for each other.
How Much Is Enough
Current guidelines from major health authorities converge on a similar range: 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days per week. That's roughly 20 to 40 minutes most days, not a dramatic time commitment, and the research shows benefits accrue well below elite athletic levels of training.
What Type of Exercise Matters Most
Aerobic exercise, walking, cycling, swimming, and similar activities, has the most direct evidence for improving endothelial function and arterial stiffness specifically. Resistance training adds separate, well-documented benefits for metabolic health, bone density, and functional strength as you age, and current guidance recommends combining both rather than choosing one over the other.
The Part People Underestimate: Consistency Over Intensity
The vascular benefits of exercise are not permanent once earned. Endothelial function improvements from training decline within weeks of stopping, which is part of why consistency matters more than occasional intense effort. A moderate, sustainable routine you actually maintain produces better long-term vascular outcomes than sporadic intense workouts you can't sustain.
