A randomized crossover trial in men with abdominal obesity found that a single dose of inorganic nitrate improved how certain brain regions responded to insulin, measured via cerebral blood flow, even though it didn't change blood insulin or glucose levels directly. The Honest Takeaway

The mechanism connecting nitric oxide to brain blood flow is well established. The evidence for a single dose acutely affecting blood flow and one narrow measure of working memory is real, from a legitimate randomized trial. The evidence that sustained daily use meaningfully improves everyday cognitive function over months is not there yet. At least one well-designed longer-term trial found no effect at all.
