Two Ways Your Body Makes Nitric Oxide, and Why Both Matter

Nitric oxide is not stored in a tank inside the body. It is produced as needed through biological pathways that respond to nutrition, movement, oxygen levels, and vascular demand.

Pathway one: nitrate to nitrite to nitric oxide

A randomized, double-blind crossover study in healthy adults found that oral L-Citrulline raised plasma L-Arginine and increased nitric oxide dependent signaling in a dose-dependent manner. This does not mean every person will feel an immediate effect, but it confirms that the pathway responds to oral L-Citrulline.

Why the two pathways are complementary

The nitrate pathway and the L-Citrulline pathway are not identical. They provide different nutritional inputs into the body's broader nitric oxide system. Exercise adds another stimulus by increasing shear stress along the vessel wall, which encourages endothelial nitric oxide production.
